In 2023, I worked with OpenStage Theatre to create an animation to be played during the live performance of Hedwig And The Angry Inch. I've been long looking forward to this show which was several times postponed due to the pandemic. It's an incredible show with a super talented cast and crew. I'm so lucky I got to be a part of bringing this story to life in Colorado. I was responsible for all creative direction, design and animation for the video accompanying the song Origin of Love. Project Goals: Make some stylized design frames based on the song created by Stephen Trask that incorporate the themes from the show in a new and fun way, without pulling too much focus from the actors on stage in front of the projection. Hedwig is a quirky and fun show, but the story is essentially a tragedy. I wanted to keep a quirky fun vibe to the animation, but still allow for that poignant moment when the characters come back together. All style frames and color boards were created by me.
Before creating the full set of color storyboards/style frames, I created rough storyboards to share the vision with the director and production design team. It's really important, especially on quick turnaround projects, to communicate the creative direction as soon as possilbe. It's much easier to make changes in this early stage. The great thing about working with OpenStage is they give artists a LOT of creative freedom. In other words, if you volunteer your time (as a donation-in-kind for the tax deduction), you get near total creative freedom. Working in black and white sketches to start also allowed me to coordinate my color palette with the colors envisioned by the makeup and costume designers.
I love creating mood boards. Taking time to look around at vrious sources of creative inspiration is so much fiun. I created these bracketed mood boards to get an idea of which visual direction and level of detail the client preferred. My design work was based on the client (OpenStage) reactions to and preferences within these mood boards. Lcuky for me, they also preferred my favorite, mood board #3.
